i have had extremely dry skin since i was kid. I get welts...hives on my body from it...though now wonder if it was lupus rash coming out.
Okay...here is what my dermatologist taught me...Do not take extremely hot showers....baths you can get away with it being hot because they cool off...plus you can put things to add moisture to your skin while soaking..just baby oil will help..few drops.
Do not wash with regular soap....do not shower or take bath daily...try to take it every 2/3 ...3 if you can stand it. When i was working....i worked out every am before work...so had to take shower but kept it to medium warm temp.
When you get out ...damp dry yourself than immediately apply cream to all of your body and face. For those places that are flaky...i guarantee this will get rid of them. Use petroleum jelly on those places...if you really want it to heal it over night..wrap that elbow for example in plastic wrap over night so really soaks in. I guarantee by morning that elbow will be fine again!!
Ingredients to Look for in a Moisturizer
It’s not necessary to pay a fortune for a good, rich moisturizer. Read the label. Ingredients that may be helpful for dry skin include:
Ceramides. Ceramides help the skin hold water and soothe dry skin. Synthetic ceramides may mimic the natural substances in the outermost layer of skin that help keep moisture in.
Dimethicone and glycerin. These draw water to the skin and retain it there.
Hyaluronic acid. Like ceramides, hyaluronic acid helps skin hold water.
Lanolin, mineral oil, and petroleum jelly. These keep water in the skin that has been absorbed during bathing.
Be sure to apply sunscreen to areas of your body that are exposed to the sun during the day.Look for a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more.
Humidifier or pot of water on your wood stove, to keep moisture in the air.
Wear cottons and other natural fibers.....wool for me unless good stuff scratches to much...so wear stuff that will not irate your skin...even your underwear.
Drink a lot of water....we all tend to gain weight in winter....drinking glass of water every hour will help with your dry skin and keep weight off....plus good for our kidneys etc.!!
Try to eat omega 3 foods....like salmon, halibut, sardines, walnuts, flax and safflower oil...this is also should help with arthritis pain...like a natural anti inflammatory.
i also can say that Eucrin calming cream....really works for body cream....i think they make face cream too. It is bit pricey but if your skin is really itching in the winter a ton....this works.
You can use the cort creams but if you have rashes etc....like i would get hives from scratching and dry skin...really bad ones...than have doctor or read on line about different types of severe dry skin problems you can develop.
I live in snow country .....which is so much worse than if living near the ocean...there you have moisture in the air and it helps a lot....but i still got severe dry skin living there. So you are doomed if you tend to have it...
In snow the humidifier can really help but also keep them clean.
But really the jelly....on extreme dry patches....works...of course you cannot use that during the day but use it at night and voila' i found it to work and so much cheaper than creams...but use it only for small patches...areas...
calming cream....and shea butter products..but calming cream worked 100% better over dry itchy skin.
if it is your hair....leave conditioner on over night and shower it out in am.....or some friends use olive oil and i even have friends who used olive oil on patchy areas on their face at night...
Hope this helps..but main key to it all....was no hot showers or long ones....and pat dry and immediately add the cream than so it holds moisture in. GOOD LUCK!!! lg
