Life With Lupus

Anti-Double-Stranded DNA

I have a positive test for anti-double stranded DNA and a positive ANA. I have not been diagnosed with SLE, but I am aware that the ant-ds dna is a marker for SLE. Is anyone aware if you can have both positives without actually having SLE? Also, could it mean that SLE has not developed yet, but is coming later?

Thank you for your consideration,

Thankful

Hello Thankful,

When you have anti-double stranded DNA and also a positive ANA then it's Lupus/SLE because if you have a positive ANA on it's on it's usually 95% Lupus.

I have DLE/SLE and my ANA/ENA then DNA came back positive and the results was high.

Thankful i've not know it not to be Lupus which is SLE and they may not have diagnosed you waiting for furthur bloods and confirmation more and also to see what symptoms you develope....or you may have Lupus mild which does happen and considering medication for you may be taking place...it's all according to how concerned your rheumo is about your condition or it maybe that you have an autoimmune disease/s involved and it's all being doubled checked.

SLE can come more later on after other issues have shown first....have you had any trouble regarding skin or body symptoms regarding joints etc.

All of the bloodwork was done 2 years ago. More specific testing was also done 2 years ago after the initial finding of the positive ds dna and the positive ANA. There was no RH Factor or Sjourns found. Also no anti-cardiolipin. One of the complements was elevated. At that time I was having some pain in the ankle/achilles area. The rheumatologist said that it was not lupus because all of the requirements were not met. She retired and now I am set-up to see a new doctor in the next month. I have continued to check the anti ds dna and the ana over the past 2 years and they have remained positive. My problem now is foot pain that is not related to overexertion or poor-fitting shoes. I am not sure what could make my feet hurt so bad--that's why I decided to make the appointment. Thanks for responding.

Thankful

Hello Thankful,

If all your blood works is still showing the same after 2yrs, then your rheumo does'nt know what she is on about...there are other autoimmune diseases besides the ones you've mentioned and alot of rheumo's specialize in this field of work yet when it comes to tretment they don't want to know, it really does annoy me while the patients are the ones suffering....what she meant when not all requirements was not met...she was one before treating you properly wanted to see at least 4 symptoms out the 11 of the criteria that alot of rheumo's go by.

You can just have Lupus in your system and if it's not strong then it may not be causing severe symptoms as yet.

You know your foot pain your getting...is it proper aching in the joints because i've got to the stage if i just go to walk as i'm limited through muscle wastage...something feels like it's just broken i get that with my toes and ankles and now my wrist but you do getting aching like this with Lupus.

Push furthur now to see another specialist and take your previous blood work with you, write down any symptoms your having besides, as all this will help you.

Your welcome thankful.

Ya know it’s funny because my lupus doesn’t test out normal- I test positive for drug induced lupus and extremely high inflammation in the body. But I have never been onto anything to cause it but I have so many side effects of lupus. I’ve learned more about my lupus on my own than from my 2 lupus drs. I cannot imagine what it’s like to feel 100% confident in my lupus dr.

Hello Deanna,

Even with your tests showing like this and also suffering affects of Lupus your specialists are abit slow and you should be on medication to help you...it's like alot of doctors want you should loads of symptoms before they'll treat you, even when bloods come in showing results.

If i was you, i'd look for furthur opinions on your health.
